The PzkPfw III was developed as a challenge set forth by the German Weapons Department. The first PzKfw III Ausf A was produced in May 1937. In December 1938, Ausf E entered production and was the first version that was produced in significant number. From August 1940, all Ausf E vehicles were rearmed with 50mm KwK 38 L/42 guns. Matilda II was a British Infantry tank of World War II. The first Matilda Mk.I was produced in 1937 but only two were in service when war broke out in September 1939. Some 2,987 tanks were produced to the end of production in August 1943. 1,084 Matildas were sent to the Soviet Union.
